Which of your passions should become your career?

This is for all my multi-passionate sisters that like to do so many things at the same time and cannot choose just one!

Nothing is wrong with you, you’re actually a wealth of information, eclectic and fascinating.

You’re maybe afraid of limiting yourself right?

Like your identity is limited to choosing that one thing that you have to do as a career.

I feel you, I have been fearing that as well growing up!

But good news, your identity is so much greater than your job and it’s not limited at all, it’s vast like the Universe and no job will take that away from you.

Very Important : your career is not your whole self, you’re so much more than that so it’s normal that that career will not encompass all that you are.

You can have it all, just not all at the same time ;-)

Maybe one thing will be your job and the other passions will be hobbies and that’s totally fine or you’ll find a way to have a portfolio career which contains more than one of your passions and that’s possible too.

  • Is it possible to succeed in a few careers at the same time?

We could be doing 3 careers at the same time but how many people do you know that can be successful in 3 things at the same time?

Not many.

And even if they do, they're probably not focusing on them at the same time.

I think that’s where strategy really comes into place because you need a clear plan with clear trade-offs.

You need to know when you’re pouring time, energy, money into one or the other and being ok with the compromises you’re making.

And let’s remember that building skills and expertise takes time so it inevitably means these two skills grow slower than If you were focusing on one thing only.

So yes it’s possible but I want you to be clear on the compromises you’ll make & not get frustrated when one of your passions lags behind or receives less of your energy.

That’s why with my clients I focus on one thing at a time & not building 3 careers at the same time because building something takes time & the fastest way to success is in fact to focus on making one strategy work very well.

Then when that strategy is rolling well, we can add something on top of it.

  • Cultivate a passion vs. making a career out of a passion

These two processes are very different and that’s why to make a career ( and make money) out of a passion we need to be strategic and smart in a different way than simply cultivating a passion.

Making beautiful paintings and selling art is wildly different even if the base is the same.

So that’s something I want to remind people who are multi-passionate.

You can do it all but not at the same time and you’re not leaving behind parts of yourself, the other passions are always parts of you but they’re not money making activities right now and that’s ok.

The beauty of it is that you’re not putting pressure on each of these passions to become a business.

Building a career/business takes time and when we put pressure on something we love to quickly convert into money we’re leading to burnout.

Few years ago I decided to study as a yoga teacher and do my coaching certification at the same time and trust me, developing two brand new businesses at the same time was not easy and inevitably one fell behind, coaching, until I deeply missed it and decided to focus only on that one.

So until now I presented you with the benefits of focusing on one thing at the time, let’s go back to the initial question :

  • Which of your passions should become your career?

The ones that you are happy deepening and evolving in the long term

The ones that take you closer to your future life vision

The one where you enjoy the process the most

It just makes it easier to run it over time If you’re focusing on one money making activity at the time and not many.

It’s more fluid as a process and once you see the strategy for that one working like a well-oiled machine then it’s worth considering adding something on top.

We live in a society of instant gratification and results and it’s unrealistic, good things take time because they require your growth, tweaks and changes and lots of love.

We have the illusion that something could be so quick to happen and we don’t consider all the details of it.

I know it may sound boring to focus on one thing at the time but from a business perspective it is actually the quickest way to have great results that can leave you the space for other ideas to be implemented.

There is something very sexy about organic and intentional growth that can be sustainable over the long-term right?

So if you have lots of incredible ideas I invite you to filter them through the lenses of the 3 points above and to truly fall in love with the process of seeing that idea becoming reality one step at a time remembering that your identity is still big and rich and expansive!

The benefits are :

  • Opportunity of seeing what actually works because you’re focusing on that one thing and one strategy

  • Clarity because you’re not throwing spaghetti at the wall hoping that one of them randomly sticks

  • Not putting pressure on all your passions to make you money because only one has to

  • Having a business that is sustainable and scalable financially so much more easily!
